Teach me, Holy Angel, correct me, protect me, guard me and guide me on the straight and safe path to the Holy City of God. Do not allow me to do things that offend your holiness and your purity. Present my desires to the Lord, offer him my prayers, show him my miseries and implore for me the remedy for them from his infinite goodness and the maternal intercession of Mary Most Holy, your Queen. Watch over me when I sleep, support me when I am tired, hold me up when I am about to fall, lift me up when I have fallen, show me the way when I am lost, encourage me when I lose heart, enlighten me when I cannot see, defend me when I am in conflict and especially on the last day of my life, be my shield against the devil. Dall’Extra omnes all’Habemus Papam. Gesù disse a Simone: «Prendi il largo e gettate le vostre reti per la pesca». Simone rispose: «Maestro, abbiamo faticato tutta la notte e non abbiamo preso nulla; ma sulla tua parola getterò le reti» (Lc 5, 1-11). Gesù si rivolse a Pietro parlando in aramaico. Le sue parole ci sono giunte in greco, ma hanno fatto la loro fortuna in latino: “Duc in altum”, prendi il largo; è diventato il motto di tanti. “Duc in altum” è un semplice invito a scostarsi dalla riva, ad andare in acque più profonde, ma nella tradizione cristiana è diventato il simbolo di un avventurarsi fiducioso nel mare della vita, dell’abbandono delle sicurezze date dalla riva, dalla terra ferma, per lanciarsi in maniera coraggiosa nell’annuncio del vangelo; ciò che fa ogni missionario che sceglie questa strada. È Gesù che invita ad affrontare il mare aperto. Pietro, pescatore esperto, avrebbe potuto contestare quel maestro che di acque e pesci non se ne intendeva affatto. Ma non era un maestro qualsiasi, era il Maestro. “Sulla tua parola getterò le reti”. Pietro si fida, al di là di ogni logica. Ci fidiamo anche noi, qualunque cosa ci chieda pronti a prendere il largo, che sia il Maestro o che sia il suo Vicario in terra: Leone XIV. La figura del nuovo Pontefice è la figura di un pastore secondo il cuore di Dio; ed in uno scenario storico più ampio e complesso dei processi culturali, pastorali e politici in corso nella Chiesa cattolica ecco che un pastore con l’esperienza del nuovo Papa, è l’esperienza più vicina a noi missionari, sacerdoti “fidei donum”, che abbiamo scelto di servire quella porzione di popolo di Dio affidatoci. La Chiesa comunità vivente di fratelli e sorelle che si amano nel nome del Signore, si è dotata — lungo la sua storia bimillenaria — di molteplici forme con cui esprimere la sua gratitudine spirituale e/o materiale nei confronti di coloro che, nel corso della loro vita cristiana, si sono distinti per il servizio gratuito e generoso a favore della Chiesa, oggi in modo particolare lo vediamo e lo riviviamo nella figura di Leone XIV. Lo stile e gli orientamenti del nuovo Papa genereranno un radicale rinnovamento nell’interpretazione della teologia e nella stessa pastoralità della Chiesa da Lui guidata. Con il “Dialogo”, e quindi come base la “Pace”, vuole impostare il suo servizio apostolico sul dialogo tra Dio e l’uomo, coinvolgendo tutte le realtà della Chiesa, così come ha fatto in modo particolare intervenendo anche riguardo il Cammino sinodale della Chiesa in Germania, per dare la giusta direzione. Ecco allora che conoscendo la sua spiritualità, le premesse fatte con il suo primo intervento, già si denotano le caratteristiche che sono possedute dal sacerdote – ed ora Pontefice - , ed ovviamente dai sacerdoti e da un sacerdote missionario come lo è stato lui e che sono: la centralità del mistero al Cristo; la Sacra Scrittura come anima del sapere teologico; la teologia dogmatica dai temi biblici, ai contributi dei Padri (orientali e occidentali), ai dogmi storici; l’approfondimento della dottrina; la teologia morale; il diritto canonico e la storia della Chiesa (secondo la costituzione dommatica Lumen Gentium); la liturgia (secondo le norme della costituzione Sacrosanctum Concilium). Sicuramente sarà un ottimo successore di Pietro!

Dearest, the month of October each year raises awareness in our communities of missionary work and missionary spirit, which embody the spirit of every disciple of Jesus: "Go and bring the Gospel of Hope to all people." This year, at the invitation of Pope Leo, we are called to intensify our prayers for peace, so that the Lord may grant it to our tormented humanity. Despite conflicts in various parts of the world, the Christian community spread throughout the world serves as a leaven of peace and hope so that holy wounds may be healed, hearts may be reconciled, and we may begin again with just and harmonious reparation. Therefore, I urge you, during this month dedicated to the missions and to Mary, a woman with an evangelical heart, to ensure that moments of personal and community prayer, especially through the recitation of the Holy Rosary, are not lacking in your parishes, groups, movements, and the communities of Consecrated Men and Women. And where possible, let us choose days of fasting to ask the Lord for the precious and indispensable gift of peace. I also ask that every parish gather together on October 11, as desired by Pope Leo, for a prayer vigil imploring peace. In his message for World Mission Day, the late Pope Francis intended to recall "some aspects of Christian missionary identity, so that we may be guided by the Spirit of God and burn with holy zeal for a new season of evangelization for the Church." I invite you to return to this text for reflection and prayer with the faithful. The papal message places Christ at the center: "The divine Missionary of hope, the supreme model of those who, throughout the centuries, carry forward the mission received from God even in extreme trials." The Pope also asks that our communities increasingly become animators of missionary hope through prayer and concrete actions, doing so: "In the manner of God, with closeness, compassion, and tenderness, cultivating personal relationships with brothers and sisters in their specific situations." Let us remember, the Pope concludes, that "the missionary work of transmitting and forming mature faith in Christ is the paradigm of every work in the Church. It is a work that requires communion of prayer and action and that promotes the missionary responsibility of the baptized and the support of new particular Churches." In view of this important event, I ask you to raise awareness among the faithful so that missionary experiences, perhaps linked to our diocesan Church, become increasingly known, and that twinning with missionary organizations be initiated. Please avoid other collections this month and direct the donations to Missio-Pontifice Opere Missionarie. I remind parish priests that the payment must be made no later than December 15, 2025, for budgetary reasons. Finally, I ask you to join the faithful in the Diocesan Missionary Vigil, which will be held on October 18, 2025, at 8:30 PM, at the Parish of Santa Maria della Speranza in Potenza. May the Lord, who rewards those who care for his Body, the Church, fill you with every blessing.
